TOKYO, June 10 (Xinhuanet) -- A powerful typhoon was heading northeast near south Japan's Okinawa Prefecture's main island on Thursday morning and heavy rain is expected, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The agency warned of heavy rain in the Okinawa and other southern regions in Japan through Thursday and Friday, while some northern areas will also experience downpours.

The agency is expecting 200-300 millimeters of rain by Friday noon in the southern regions.

At noon Thursday, Typhoon Conson, the season's fourth, was about 90 kilometers west-northwest of Naha and heading northeast at 30 km per hour.

The typhoon had an atmospheric pressure of 965 hectopascals at its center and was packing winds of up to 125 kph.

Conson, the name of a tourist resort in Vietnam, is then expected to dissipate into an extratropical low-pressure depression by Friday morning. Enditem
