KABUL, June 10 (Xinhuanet) -- Following the bloody attacks on Chinese workers in Afghanistan's northern Kunduz province early Thursday morning, the ongoing voters' registration process halted there, a UN spokesman said Thursday.
"As a result of sad incident in Kunduz last night, registration sites are currently closed in Kunduz," Manoel de Almeida e Silva of UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) told journalists at anews briefing in Kabul.
In the gruesome attack conducted by a group of some 20 armed men at 01:00 local time (2030 GMT Wednesday), 11 workers of a Chinese construction company were killed and four others wounded.
"We suspend it temporarily until we can have a better of understanding of what really happened and what the possible complications are," he added.
"We hope the Electoral Secretariat to reopen the registration sites by Saturday," the spokesman said.
More than 3 million people have registered for the first-ever Afghan landmark elections slated for next September.
The spokesman also said that the Special Representative of UN Secretary General (SRSG) to Afghanistan, Jean Arnault, strongly condemned the killing of Chinese workers.
"The special representative is appalled by the killing of 11 Chinese construction workers last night on the outskirts of Kunduzand condemns it in the strongest possible terms," he said.
The 11 Chinese were among the some 100 workers at the site, some 36 km south of Kunduz. Many of them came from eastern China's Shandong province and just arrived in Afghanistan on Tuesday.
So far, no group or individual has claimed responsibility for the latest bloody incident, but the fugitive leaders of Taliban and their allies have vowed to disrupt any rebuilding activities run under US influence in the post-Taliban nation. Enditem |
