Major incidents causing Chinese deaths overseas in 2004

    BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhuanet) -- Eleven Chinese workers were killed in a terrorist attack in Kunduz province in north Afghanistan Thursday morning. Following are major incidents causing Chinese casualties overseas in 2004:

    Jan. 29 -- A Chinese was critically wounded in a suicide bombing on a bus in Jerusalem. The attacker and nine others were killed with more than 40 wounded in the incident.     

    Feb. 5 -- Over 30 Asian cockle pickers, including 20 Chinese, died when they were caught by fast-rising tides off the coast of anorthwest England bay.     

    Feb. 13 -- One Chinese student was drowned in strong storm waves and another Chinese student was missing while they were swimming off the eastern coast of North Island, New Zealand.     

    March 14 -- Nine Chinese citizens were killed in a landslide which hit southern Kazakhstan. The mudslide hit an apartment blockof the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) in Kazakhstan and nine Chinese CNPC staff were buried and found dead.     

    April 13 -- Five Chinese crew members were missing after a Malaysian cargo ship sank in rough seas in the Bay of Bengal off east Indian coast.

    Indian Coast Guard vessels rescued 12 of the 17 Chinese crew members of MV Genius Star-VI, which sank in the high seas off the West Bengal coast about 190 kilometers southeast of Haldia town.

    May 3 -- Three Chinese were killed and nine other Chinese and two Pakistanis were injured in a car bomb explosion in Pakistan's southwestern Balochistan Province.

    The Chinese were working on a seaport project in Gawadar, about500 kilometers west of Karachi, close to the border with Iran.

    A car, parked near the port, exploded as a coach, carrying 12 Chinese and two Pakistanis, arrived at the Gawadar port, killing three Chinese.     

    May 23 -- Four people, including two Chinese nationals, were killed at Roissy-Charles de Gaulle international airport near Paris when part of a roof of a passenger terminal collapsed.

    The two Chinese were members of a Chinese trade delegation froma Beijing company. They were killed while waiting at Terminal 2E of the international airport for a plane from Paris to Mexico.     

    June 10 -- Eleven Chinese workers were killed in a terrorist attack in Kunduz province in north Afghanistan.

    The attack occurred at around 01:00 a.m. local time on a construction site 36 km south of Kunduz province when some 20 gunmen opened fire at Chinese workers and security guards, leaving11 dead and five injured. Enditem
