MADRID, June 8 (Xinhuanet) -- Spanish First Deputy Prime Minister Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega said Tuesday that the UN Security Council's resolution on Iraq "is not fully satisfactory but implies a step forward."
Fernandez de la Vega told local press that the governments of Spain, Brazil and Chile contributed a lot to this resolution including the issues on human rights and the return of Iraq's sovereignty.
The vice prime minister refuted the allegation that Spain's decision to withdraw its troops from Iraq was a mistake and said it was just opposite. The withdrawal has even helped change the situation in Iraq, she added.
Someone could imagine that the position envisaged in the resolution would be the same if France, Germany and other Latin American countries had not voiced their "frontal" rejection to thewar a year ago.
On the same day, Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos said the withdrawal accelerated the end of the Iraqi occupation.
He said Spain's position was "an instrument to return to multilateralism." The Spanish government is committed to the future of a zone that is essential for stability and security, andto the interests of Iraq, the Middle East and Europe.
Spain withdrew 1,200 troops deployed in Iraq last month, as Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero had promised during his campaign. Enditem |
