LONDON, June 7 (Xinhuanet) -- British Prime Minister
Tony Blair on Monday condemned Sunday's attack on two BBC journalists in the
Saudi capital of Riyadh, calling for vigilance against such attacks.
BBC cameraman Simon Cumbers was killed and security correspondent Frank Gardner seriously wounded after gunmen
opened fire on them in a Riyadh street while they were working on a story for
the BBC.
"Our first thoughts are obviously with the families
of those that have been involved...I think it is important we recognize that day
in, day out, this is a strategy by terrorists who will kill innocent people, who
will kill people who are involved in our democracy," Blair told reporters.
"They are a threat in literally every part of the
world. We have to be vigilant and get out and get after them and make sure we
deal with this issue," he added.
The attack came just days after 22 people, most of
them foreigners, were killed in a shoot-out in the eastern Saudi oil hub of
Khobar.
Referring to the Riyadh attack on the BBC news team,
Sherard Cowper-Coles, British ambassador to Saudi Arabia, told the BBC on Monday
that the embassy is investigating the incident.
"I have spoken to the (Saudi) interior minister and
it seems that Frank and Simon Cumbers, both of whom I knew, were filming inan
area of South Riyadh where one of the wanted terrorists was supposed to have
lived and there was a drive-by shooting attack onthem with some sort of machine
pistol," the ambassador told the BBC.
According to the BBC, Gardner and Cumbers traveled to
Saudi Arabia last week following the terrorist attacks in Khobar. Enditem
