JERUSALEM, June 6 (Xinhuanet) -- The Israeli cabinet approved Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's revised disengagement plan by a 14 to 7 majority on Sunday evening.
Nine Likud members and five ministers from Shinui voted for theplan while five other Likud members and two ministers from National Religious Party (NRP) voted against it.
The following are the details of Sharon's plan to disengage from conflict with the Palestinians:
-- In the name of defending Israel and ending the conflict withthe Palestinians, Israel would demolish 21 Jewish settlements in Gaza and four isolated enclaves in the West Bank.
-- Around 7,500 Israeli settlers in Gaza and several hundred settlers in the northern West Bank would be evacuated. The West Bank is home to about 230,000 settlers and over two million Palestinians.
-- Each of the pullouts would be subject to a cabinet debate and vote, a retreat from the original plan that all pullouts wouldbe carried out all at once based on a single cabinet approval.
-- Financial restitution and building of new homes for uprootedsettlers would be carried out in the meantime.
-- Sharon has made clear Israel intends to hold on to some WestBank areas under any final peace treaty.
-- The plan agrees to dismantle all settler homes, but states that economic assets would remain intact and given to an international agency.
-- Israel claims to control Gaza's border with Egypt and the strip's air space until it is sure its security would be guaranteed.
-- Israel agrees to coordinate the plan with the international community but not with the Palestinian Authority.
-- The plan says that it will continue building its controversial West Bank barrier while taking into account humanitarian concerns. Enditem |
