Britain set to curb working visas for people from Commonwealth
www.chinaview.cn 2004-06-06 20:59:12

LONDON, June 6 (Xinhuanet) -- British Prime Minister Tony Blair is set to limit the number of people from Commonwealth countries applying for working holiday permits, which allow people to come to Britain for two years and subsidize their stay with casual work, the Sunday Telegraph newspaper reported.

A leaked government memo suggests the prime minister was reacting to the dramatic rise in applications for the Commonwealth Working Holiday Maker scheme from countries as India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Ghana and Bangladesh.

Under the new proposals, the British government will introduce quotas based on the historical take-up of the scheme.

It will also introduce new restrictions to make the scheme only available to people from Commonwealth countries with satisfactory return arrangement.

The prime minister has already ordered that the new restrictions should be made within weeks, according to the newspaper.   Enditem
