JERUSALEM, June 2 (Xinhuanet) -- Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon told members of the Knesset (Parliament) Foreign Affairs andDefense Committee on Wednesday that the disengagement plan would involve Jordan.
Israel captured the West Bank from Jordan in the 1967 War, and the Gaza Strip from Egypt.
Sharon has asked for greater Egyptian security involvement in the Gaza Strip when Israel withdraws from the area.
Speaking to Israel Radio following the meeting, Labor lawmaker Effraim Sneh said in response to the suggestion that the "Palestinian problem and terror can not be bypassed through other countries".
"Thinking that other countries can do the job is a dangerous illusion," he said.
Sharon also said at Wednesday's meeting that the evacuation of settlements outlined in the disengagement plan will be completed bythe end of 2005.
He showed confidence that the plan will pass a cabinet vote thisSunday, despite opposition from Likud ministers and rightist parties.
Rumors continued to fly that Sharon might ensure a majority in the cabinet by either firing ministers or by widening the cabinet. Enditem |
