GAZA, June 1 (Xinhuanet) -- Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat said on Tuesday that Egypt still has not received Israel's clear position about an Egyptian initiative for Israelis and Palestinians.
"We welcome the Egyptian efforts...to protect the peace process and are still waiting for Israel's response to make a comprehensive and just peace, based on international legitimacy and resolutions," Arafat told reporters.
"Israel has not responded yet to the Egyptian calls," he said.
The Palestinian leader noted that Palestinians have adopted a series of measures in order to reach a ceasefire with Israel, reiterating Palestinians' commitment to all the previously signed agreements with Israel.
But "Israel has never remained committed to any agreement," Arafat claimed.
Palestinian sources had reported recently that Egypt had presented an initiative that calls for reaching a bilateral ceasefire agreement between Palestinians and Israelis.
The Egyptian plan also called on reinstating law and order in the Gaza Strip in anticipation for the Israeli evacuation of the strip, where Egypt had agreed to rehabilitate and train Palestinian security apparatuses' cadres. Enditem |
