BAGHDAD, June 1 (Xinhuanet) -- United Nations special envoy for Iraq Lakhdar Brahimi confirmed that Ghazi Yawar was appointed as new president of the country on Tuesday.
He said in a statement that Ibrahim Jaffari from the Shiite al-Daawa Islamic Party and Rose Noori Shawis of Massoud Barzani's Kurdistan Democratic Party were appointed as vice presidents.
Brahimi also confirmed that the presidency had initially been offered to Adnan Pachachi, but the 81-year-old had turned down thepost for personal reasons.
He said he had passed on recommendations for a 26-member cabinet team to newly-appointed prime minister Iyad Allawi.
Allawi, a Shiite former Iraqi intelligence officer, will announce his government line-up later on Tuesday. Enditem |
