BAGHDAD, June 1 (Xinhuanet) -- The new Iraqi president will be announced by United Nations special envoy Lakhdar Brahimi "in the next hour," CNN said on Tuesday.
Earlier Tuesday, CNN reported that Adnan Pachachi, 81-year-old former foreign minister, was chosen as the new Iraqi president following the power transfer on June 30. But Pachachi had reportedly turned down the offer.
Meanwhile, Ghazi Yawar, a Sunni tribal leader, was recommended to take the post after Pachachi rejected the appointment.
Pachachi is favored by both Brahimi and the United States and Yawar is preferred by the Iraqi Governing Council. Enditem |
