Egypt ready to help with any Israeli withdrawal: FM

CAIRO, May 30 (Xinhuanet) -- Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher reiterated that Egypt is ready to help with any Israeli withdrawal from Palestinian and Arab territories.

But such withdrawal should be within the framework of full pullout from Palestinian and other Arab territories and in accordance with the roadmap and the Arab initiative adopted by the Arab summit in Beirut in 2002, Maher told reporters.

The foreign minister noted that Egypt was prepared to help with training Palestinian police forces, with a view to rebuilding a part of the Palestinian infrastructure destroyed by Israel.

Asked about any Egyptian step to return its ambassador to Tel Aviv, Maher said Egypt has repeatedly asserted that an improvement in Egyptian-Israeli ties could only happen if Israel took steps on the ground towards making progress in dealing with the Palestinian problem and stopping all its practices against the Palestinian people.

After he was defeated in a referendum by his right-wing Likud party in a referendum on his Gaza disengagement plan, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has revised the plan and brought it to the cabinet.

Despite the fact that he only has 11 ministers in favor while 12 ministers oppose the initiative, Sharon warned Sunday that he is ready to take "unprecedented political steps," including the dismissal of ministers, in order to make his plan be passed.

According to Sharon's revised plan, the settlements will be removed in four stages.

In the first stage, three Gaza Strip settlements - Netzarim, Morag and Kfar Darom will be evacuated while the second group slated for removal are all in the northern West Bank: Ganim, Kadim,Sa-Nur and Homesh.

The third group consists of the settlements in Gush Katif, while settlements in the northern Gaza Strip - Alei Sinai, Dugit and Nissanit - make up the final group.  Enditem
