www.chinaview.cn 2004-05-27 15:01:20

HAVANA, May 26 (Xinhuanet) -- The floods caused by rainstorms in Haiti and the Dominican Republic have killed more than 660 people on Wednesday as rescue workers recovered more bodies buried under mud and rubble.

According to reports from the Dominican capital of Santo Domingo, 300 people were confirmed dead, most of whom were killed in the devastated town of Jimani near the border with Haiti.

The Dominican government has declared Jimani, 280 km southwest of Santo Domingo, a "disaster area and territory of public calamity."

Rescue workers were working hard to find bodies and rebury themin common graves. But mud and landslides prevented rescue teams from reaching some areas.

The death toll in Haiti stood at 360, including the 300 found in Mapou, a poor rural town in the southeast part of the country.

Other bodies have been recovered in Fonds Verettes, about 56 kmsoutheast of the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince.

Last week, a fierce tropical storm lashed the Caribbean island of Hispaniola shared by the Dominican Republic and Haiti. The Soleil river originating from Haiti overflowed after days of heavyrains.

Some 400 people were still listed missing in the Dominican Republic and hundreds were unaccounted for in Haiti. The death toll is expected to reach 2,000 as more bodies were recovered in Mapou, said the Civil Defense authorities in Haiti.

Aid has been provided to the flood-hit areas by the US-led multinational force in Haiti, which was sent there to restore order after an armed revolt against ousted former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide in February.

A team of United Nations humanitarian agencies and non-governmental organizations was carrying aid to Fonds Verettes, oneof the Haitian towns worst hit by the floods, said the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) Wednesday,

Meanwhile, the Spanish International Cooperation Agency (AECI) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) coordinated the distribution of relief supplies to victims in the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

Carlos Cabanillas, the AECI's general coordinator in the Dominican Republic, said on Wednesday that he met with Nicky Fabiancic, UNDP's local director, to discuss the distribution of aid to the two countries.

The Spanish Red Cross has offered 36,000 euros (43,200 US dollars) in emergency fund and sent two experts to both countries to assess the short- and middle-term assistance required.

Japan announced on Wednesday to offer 100,000 US dollars in equipment and materials to the victims of the floods that isolatedthe Dominican Republic's border town of Jimani.

A Japanese official said the aid, including tents, water tanks, mattresses, blankets and cardboard boxes, will reach the Dominicancapital of Santo Domingo Thursday.

The United States on Wednesday also promised to provided 50,000dollars in aid to the Caribbean nation.

The European Union was preparing a package worth 2 million euros (2.43 million dollars) for flood victims, the European Commission said in Brussels. Enditem
