GAZA, May 26
(Xinhuanet) -- The Fatah movement chaired by Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat
held on Wednesday its first local elections in five years, starting with the
areas in the Gaza Strip.
Rachid Abu Shbak, member of Fatah's higher committee and head of preventive security services in Gaza, said these
elections were held in anticipation for holding the movement's Sixth
Conference.
"These elections are held on the level of the
areas," he said. "The decision of holding the elections was made a month ago by
the movement's central committee."
The elections were held
in response to a series of calls launched by Fatah members and cadres, who
consistently called for electing the movement's new leaders and holding the
conference as a first step toward reforms.
Abu Shbak said,
"there are no specific timetables for the completion of the elections in Gaza,
as it will fully depend on the developments there."
Asked
about the possibility of holding similar elections in the West Bank, he said the
issue depended entirely on the situation there as most of the areas are under
Israeli military occupation. Enditem |
