Spokesman: reunification law still outside procedure

HONG KONG, May 25 (Xinhuanet) -- China's legislature still hasn't initiated the procedure for the making of a proposed law on reunification, a spokesman of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region said here Tuesday.

The remarks on this topic that are much talked about in Hong Kong these days "are groundless," said the spokesman.

The spokesman said the suggestion to institute a law on reunification was put forward to Premier Wen Jiabao on May 9 when he met with the representatives of the Chinese community in Britain during his visit to the European country.

The participants showed great concern over China's reunification cause, voiced firm opposition to the attempts to separate Taiwan from China, and suggested a national law on reunification be drafted, among others, the spokesman said.

According to the spokesman, Premier Wen, impressed by the patriotic enthusiasm of the participants, assured them that the Central Government would seriously consider all proposals beneficial to the complete reunification of the motherland. Enditem
