BUCHAREST, May 24 (Xinhuanet) -- At least fifteen people were killed and eight others seriously injured early on Monday in a truck explosion in southeast Romania, police said.

The explosion occurred at about 5 a.m. local time after a truck carrying nitrogen-based fertilizer overturned in Mihailesti, about70 km from Bucharest. Two journalists working at the scene and five firefighters trying to put out the flames were among the dead.

local government Officials said the explosion left a crater 14 meters deep, damaged about several houses in Mihailesti and disrupted traffic on the national road linking the capital to the city of Buzau.

An investigation into the cause of the accident has been under way. Enditem
