MEXICO CITY, May 3 (Xinhuanet) -- Mexico's decision to recall its ambassador from Havana and expel the Cuban representative does notmean the bilateral relations are totally cut off but are reduced to a lower level, Foreign Minister Luis Ernesto Derbez said Monday.
"It is not a breakup of relations," Derbez told a local radio.
Derbez said the Mexican government was awaiting reaction from Cuba while Mexican Ambassador Roberta Lajous has already returned to Mexico.
He said political councilor of the Cuban embassy, Orlando Silva, who was declared a "persona non grata" Sunday night, would fly Monday to Havana. He was expelled for his "turning from an analystto an activist," Derbez said.
Cuban Ambassador to Mexico Jorge Bolanos was ordered Sunday to leave the country within 48 hours.
Derbez also told the press it was "insulting" to be asked if Mexico had consulted with the United States on the decision to reduce diplomatic relations with Havana to the lowest level of a business attache.
The Peruvian government also decided to withdraw its Ambassador Juan Alvarez Vita from Cuba. Derbez said no consultations were held with the Peruvian government. Enditem |
