London to host Quartet meeting on roadmap peace plan
www.chinaview.cn 2004-04-30 03:43:00

LONDON, April 29 (Xinhuanet) -- The British Foreign Office said Thursday that the Quartet Middle East mediators would meet here on Friday for talks on how to revive the Middle East roadmap peace plan.

According to the ministry, the US Embassy in London would host the meeting of delegates from the European Union, the United States, the United Nations and Russia.

It was reported that US Assistant Secretary of State William Burns would head the US delegation and the European Union would be represented by its Middle East envoy Marc Otte.

Supported by the Quartet, the roadmap envisages an independent Palestinian state by 2005. But it has been stalled by continuing violence in the Middle East region.

The Quartet meeting comes after Washington voiced its support for an Israel's unilateral plan to withdraw from the Gaza Strip and parts of the West Bank, which the Palestinians claim is a move to redraw borders.

The United Nations has stressed that any Israeli initiative should not preclude negotiations between the Israelis and Palestinians on "final status" issues and the European Union insisted the roadmap peace plan would be the only way forward for bringing peace in the region. Enditem
