Iran asks US to compensate victims of Iraqi chemical weapons
www.chinaview.cn 2004-04-28 23:29:36

TEHRAN, April 28 (Xinhuanet) -- The Tehran Public Court issued a verdict ordering the US government to pay 600 million US dollars to compensate Iranian victims of Iraqi chemical attack in the northwestern town of Sardasht, the official IRNA news agency reported Wednesday.

The verdict said the US government encouraged Saddam Hussein to initiate an unconventional war on Iran several months after the Islamic revolution in Iran in 1979.

The verdict was issued as per a legal action made by a number of victims in Sardasht against the US government.

Iraq carried out its first chemical attack against residents of Sardasht in 1987, killing and wounding many people.

Meanwhile, the court issued two other verdicts demanding compensation from the US government as per indictments lodged by victims of anti-Iran policy of the United States, IRNA reported.

The verdicts have been forwarded to the Swiss Embassy in Tehran which takes care of the US interest here.

The three verdicts totally required the US government to pay 1.8 billion dollars compensation to the Iranian people.  Enditem
