ISLAMABAD, April 25 (Xinhuanet)-- Tribesmen in Khyber Agency, one of Pakistan's seven tribal areas bordering Afghanistan, handed over a big cache of heavy arms and ammunition to the government on Sunday.
A hand-over ceremony was held at a local military headquarters near Peshawar, capital city of the Northwest Frontier province, according to the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP)
The weapons included a number of rockets having the capacity of carrying nuclear war-head, mortars, bombs and etc., said APP, adding that most of the firearms were gained during the former Soviet invasion in neighboring Afghanistan.
This "voluntary surrender" of arms by tribesmen to the administration is a sign of their trust on the government, a military source was quoted as saying.
Tension had been intensified between the tribesmen and the central government since a major military crackdown on the al-Qaida fugitives and their local supporters was launched last month in South Waziristan, another semi-autonomous tribal area.
Bloody shoot-out took place between the tribal militants and the military personnel during the operation, leaving at least 100 from both sides killed.
On Saturday the military and the tribal militants clinched a peace deal in South Waziristan, under which the tribesmen promised not to offer shelter for foreign terror suspects and in return, the government granted them a amnesty and halted the military operation. Enditem |
