Urgent: Annan proposes sending 8,300 peacekeepers to Haiti

    UNITED NATIONS, April 20 (Xinhuanet) -- United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan proposed on Tuesday sending a 8,300-strong UN peacekeeping mission to Haiti to help establish a lasting peace inthe Caribbean state.

    UN spokesman Fred Eckhard said the force, to be known as the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti, would be composed of up to 6,700 troops, 1,622 civilian police and a number of civilian staff. Enditem
