KABUL, April 10 (Xinhuanet) -- The US-led coalition troops in Afghanistan would stay away of infighting between warlords in the war-weary country, US military spokesman Matt Beevers said Saturday.
"We look at the situation in Faryab. The issue is not more thanan internal matter," the spokesman told reporters at a news briefing while referring to the factional fighting in the northernviolence-hit province.
Following the infighting which erupted last Tuesday between regional warlord General Abdul Rashid Dostum and troops loyal to Faryab governor Anayatullah Anayat. The governor and his commanderfled the provincial capital Maimana.
The incident prompted the US-backed Karzai government in Kabul to send in 700 soldiers of the fledgling Afghan National Army (ANA)to bring the situation under control and enable the defeated governor and his associates to return to their offices.
"We are looking to support the Afghan government and the peopleof that province to ensure stability, calm and maintain law and order," added Beevers.
The situation, he said, was calm Saturday and the people were doing their business.
"We continue our surveillance and reconnaissance flights over the area to help improve security," Beevers said.
Dostam whose forces overran Mainaman Thursday has reportedly blamed powerful Interior Minister Ali Ahmad Jalali and his former arch rival Defense Minister Mohammad Qasim Fahim for the incident and called for their removal.
"If the president does not sack them his government will fail," Dostam warned, according to reports.
Meanwhile, Defense Ministry spokesman General Zahir Azimi Saturday described Dostum's action as "illegal," saying that "irresponsible militias should leave the city and enable the provincial authority to resume its normal function." Enditem
