LOS ANGELES, April 7 (Xinhuanet) -- Ted Turner, founder of the leading US
TV news cable network CNN, sounded almost humble Wednesday as he admired his new
Hollywood Walk of Fame star.
"This is a hoot for me ...," Turner said. "I didn't get here onmy acting ability, even though
I had a cameo appearance in both 'Gettysburg' and 'Gods and Generals,'" which he
produced and financed.
Jeff Daniels, who appeared in both films, was on hand for the ceremony in
front of the Hollywood Roosevelt hotel, as were actresses Betty Garrett,
Margaret O'Brien and Ann Rutherford. Their films often are shown on the Turner
Classic Movies (TCM) channel.
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio on Nov. 19, 1938, Turner graduated from Brown
University, where he was vice president of the DebatingUnion and commodore of
the Yacht Club.
Turner began his business career as an account executive for Turner
Advertising Co., now Turner Broadcasting System Inc. He became president and
chief operating officer in 1963, a position he would hold until the company's
1996 merger with Time Warner.
Turner entered the television business in 1970 with the purchase of Channel
17, an Atlanta independent UHF station. Six years later, in January 1976, he
diversified the company by purchasing Major League Baseball's Atlanta Braves.
On June 1, 1980, Turner started CNN, the world's first round-the-clock news
network. A second all-news service, Headline News, began operating Jan. 1, 1982,
offering updated newscasts on the half-hour.
CNN International, launched in September 1985, is the company'sglobal news
service. It is distributed in more than 210 countries and territories worldwide.
And in December 1991, Turner acquired the rights, library and Los Angeles
production facilities of Hanna-Barbera Cartoons, whichled to the launch of the
Cartoon Network on Oct. 1, 1992.
In January 1994, Turner Broadcasting merged with New Line Cinema, with
films from New Line and the combined Turner and Warner Bros. library providing
programming for TCM, a 24-hour commercial-free network. Enditem
