BERLIN, April 7 (Xinhuanet) -- A German court in Hamburg on Wednesday temporarily released Mounir al-Motassadeq, the sole man jailed over Sept. 11 attacks, after the country's highest legal authorities ordered a retrial for him.

Moroccan Motassadeq was jailed for 15 years in February last year after being convicted of being a member of a terrorist cell which plotted the attacks on the United States in 2001 that killedmore than 3,000 people.

But on March 4, the Federal Constitution Court, the supreme court in Germany, ordered a new trial of the Motassadeq case, on the basis that the essential evidence had not been properly addressed.

The supreme court judges said evidence from a witness that might have helped the defense had not been heard and that Motassadeq should be released on bail pending a retrial.

Accusers said that Ramzi bin al-Shibh, a Yemeni who was in the US custody, had confessed to a role of Motassadeq in the attacks. But the United States has refused to release interrogation transcripts for the Hamburg trial.

Motassadeq has been in custody since late 2001. He was the first person convicted of involvement in the Sept. 11 attacks. Enditem
