KIGALI, April 6 (Xinhuanet) -- The Belgian government is erecting a genocide memorial site in Rwanda, in memory of 10 Belgian soldiers and Rwandans killed in the 1994 genocide, Rwandan Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Robert Bayigamba said here Tuesday.

The memorial site, under construction in Kigali, capital of Rwanda, will be completed by this week.

Capt. Frederic Brunelle, overseer of the construction work, said the site had a profound implication to Belgium's commitment to fighting genocide ideologies.

"In April 1994, 10 Belgian soldiers were slaughtered here. This is a sign that we shall never forget them and all the Rwandans that lost their lives," he said.

The Belgian soldiers were killed on April 7, 1994 along with former Rwandan prime minister Agathe Uwilingiyimana by then presidential guards.

The army officer said a commemoration ceremony would be held atthe site on April 7, when Rwanda and the United Nations mark the 10th anniversary of the genocide.

"It is a sign of peace between Rwanda and Belgium," said Brunelle.

He said the site would also constitute a museum stocked with anti-genocide literature and material. Enditem
