The photograph is an example of the work of Cole, winner of the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography, awarded April 5, 2004, by Columbia University on the recommendation of the Pulitzer Board. The Los Angeles Times won five Pulitzer Prizes, winning journalism's top awards for their coverage of California wildfires and Wal-Mart, offbeat car reviews, editorials on the troubled state government and photographs of Liberia 's civil war.
