¡¡BERLIN, April 5 (Xinhua) -- A German court in Hamburg on Mondaysaid the ruling of the case against Mounir el Motassadeq, the only Sept.11 suspect ever convicted is imminent, but some reports here said that the court has asked prosecutors to drop their retrial case.
A spokesman for Hamburg State Superior Court said the judges discussed the case on Monday and have not made a ruling yet over whether to free Motassadeq.
Motassadeq's lawyer Josef Graessle-Muenscher said the court looked favorably at Friday's hearing on his client's release on bail. He said that the court asked prosecutors to consider dropping the case.
A judge of the case said after Friday's hearing that the case may collapse if it goes to a retrial, the first time the court haspublicly raised doubts about the government's case.
In March, German Federal Supreme Court supported an appeal by lawyers for Motassadeq that he was denied a fair trial and overturned the 15 years jail sentence made by the Hamburg court last year.
Motassadeq's lawyers have appealed that Motassadeq was wrongly convicted because US authorities refused to submit evidence by Ramzi Binalshihb, a key al Qaida suspect. Enditem
