SEOUL, March 10 (Xinhuanet) -- South Korea and Sweden expressed support Wednesday for a peaceful resolution of the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula.

In a joint statement issued at the end of a meeting between South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun and Swedish Prime Minister Goran Persson, the two sides shared the view that "a peaceful resolution of the nuclear issue through dialogue is essential for the maintenance of peace and stability not only in Northeast Asia but globally," reported South Korean national Yonhap News Agency.

In the joint statement, the Swedish premier also supported South Korea's "peace and prosperity" policy, which includes the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

Roh and Persson also pledged to deepen bilateral cooperative ties in trade and investment through the Invest in Sweden Agency and Invest Korea, state-run agencies of the two nations charged with attracting foreign investment.

The two sides also concurred on enhancing cooperation in information technology, biotechnology, environment, traffic safety, social changes and challenges for the welfare society.

Persson, who flew to Seoul Tuesday, will make speeches at Dankook University and Ewha Womans University and receive an honorary doctorate from Dankook before leaving Seoul Thursday. Enditem
