LONDON, March 8 (Xinhuanet) -- The United States should give greater commitment to bringing the stalled peace process in the Middle East region back on track, visiting Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei said here on Monday.

"I reiterate our call to the US administration to act upon its moral and political responsibility as a sponsor of the peace process," Qurei told an audience at the Royal Institute of International Affairs in London.

"Without the United States, the great superpower of this world,it will not be possible to end this conflict," Qurei said, stressing that the United States should act to revive the "Roadmap" peace plan aimed at establishing a Palestinian state by 2005.

There could be no hope of wider democratic reforms in the Middle East without resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the Palestinian prime minister said.

In his speech, Qurei also said the European Union, Russia and the United Nations -- the three other members of the Middle East mediation "quartet" along with the United States -- should also domore to restart the peace process.

Qurei met on Monday with British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw for talks on the Mideast peace process and he was also expected tomeet with British Prime Minister Tony Blair later in the day.

It is Qurei's first visit to London since his appointment last September.

The visit follows fresh fighting in the Gaza strip on Sunday which reportedly left 14 Palestinians dead, including three children. Enditem
