HANOI, Feb. 24 (Xinhuanet) -- The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed Vietnam's latest case of H5N1 infection from southern Dong Nai province, which was already reported by the country's Health Ministry last Wednesday.

    "Laboratory tests have confirmed an additional case of H5N1 infection in Vietnam. The case is a 16-month-old baby girl from Dong Nai province," WHO said in a statement posted on its website on Tuesday.

    The girl, who was admitted to a hospital in Ho Chi Minh City inmid-February, "remains in stable condition," it noted.

    The ministry announced last Wednesday that a 16-month-old infant named Vo Thi Be Giau from the province's Long Thanh district was infected with H5N1. She was hospitalized in the city-based Pediatrics Hospital No. 1 on Feb. 17 after first showing symptoms of flu on Feb. 13.

    As of Monday afternoon, the country reported 283 flu type A infections and suspects, including 40 fatalities. Meanwhile, 158 patients were discharged from hospitals. Enditem
