China opposes Israel building separation wall
www.chinaview.cn 2004-02-19 21:03:15

BEIJING, Feb. 19 (Xinhuanet) -- China definitely opposes Israel's construction of a separation wall, which will harm the Middle East peace process, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue here Thursday.

Zhang said at a regular press conference that China will not change its stance to support the resolution of the UN General Assembly on asking the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to issue an advisory opinion on the legal consequences of Israel's construction of the separation wall.

China believed that the ICJ was able to properly handle the issue, Zhang added.

Zhang said the Palestinian-Israeli conflict should be resolved through political negotiation in line with related UN resolutions and the principle of "land for peace", and only in this way can peace and stability be resumed in the Middle East region.

The ICJ, based in The Hague, is the principal judicial organ ofthe United Nations. It has the dual role of settling legal disputes between member states and issuing advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by international organs and agencies. Enditem
