Cholera kills two more people in Mozambique
www.chinaview.cn 2004-02-11 04:44:50

ĦĦMAPUTO, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- Two more people have died of cholera in Mozambique, one in Maputo, and the other in the centralMozambican city of Quelimane, local media reported on Tuesday.

This brings to 31 the total number of known victims of the disease in Maputo, since the first cases were reported in the capital of Mozambique Maputo in late December, .

The Cholera Treatment Center, in the Mavalane General Hospital,in Maputo, is reporting a decline in the number of new cases, withonly 98 patients admitted on Monday. And two weeks ago the center was receiving about 300 patients a day.

Meanwhile, the second phase of vaccination against cholera is to start this week in the northern Mozambican province of Nampula, covering particularly prisons, as a means of preventing the spreadof the disease in those institutions.

The first phase ended on Sunday, having catered for about 5,000refugees, mainly from the Great Lakes region, at the Maretane center, on the outskirts of Nampula city.

The Nampula provincial health directorate explained that the choice of prisons to receive the vaccine took into account the very poor sanitation conditions there.

The Nampula Health authorities are warning people against a possible new upsurge of the disease, particularly because of restrictions in the supply of clean water to Nampula city.

The water supply system in Nampula, the country's third largestcity, has been in crisis for the past month. Enditem
