BERLIN, Feb. 5 (Xinhuanet) -- A German court Thursday acquitted a Moroccan charged with helping to plot the Sept. 11 attacks.
Abdelghani Mzoudi is now a free man and will receive financial compensation for the time spent in jail, the Hamburg Supreme Court ruled.
But he's unlikely to be allowed to remain in Germany for much longer, however, as Hamburg's top security official has announced he wants to deport him to his home country.
The 31-year-old Moroccan had been accused of more than 3,000 counts of being an accessory to murder -- a number based on the death toll in the suicide jet strikes on US cities -- as well as membership of a terrorist organization.
Prosecutors had demanded a 15-year imprisonment for him. But judges ruled that there was not enough evidence to confirm the charge.
Presiding Judge Klaus Ruehle said the acquittal was not a sign that the court had been convinced of Mzoudi's innocence, but rather the prosecution's failure to prove their case.
In December, the court had already freed him from jail, however, after an anonymous witness had apparently exonerated him. That witness is believed to be Ramzi Binalshibh, who allegedly organized the attacks and is now in US custody.
Saying that not enough information about the witness's testimony had been revealed, lawyers of relatives of Sept. 11 victims had tried to delay sentencing on Thursday, but rejected by the judges. Enditem |
