At least 30 dead, 150 missing in ferry collision in Bangladesh

DHAKA, Feb. 5 (Xinhuanet) -- At least 30 people were feared drowned and 150 more missing in a ferry crash accident in south Bangladesh before dawn on Thursday, officials said.

The tragedy happened when two ferries coming from opposite directions collided head-on in Hijla upazila (sub-distict), Barisal district, some 160 miles south of the capital Dhaka.

But the administrative officials in Barisal could not confirm the exact death tolls at the moment.

Ferry and boat disasters are common in Bangladesh, as the country is criss-crossed by about 250 rivers, and ferry is a key means of transport.

Many people living in urban areas went back to their hometown villages to reunite with their dear ones during the Eid-ul-Azha beginning on Feb. 2. Now a large bunch of people are returning to cities and towns as the official three-day-leave ended on Tuesday, so the launches can be frequently seen dangerously overcrowded at busy ferries.
