US soldier killed by roadside bomb in Iraq

    BAGHDAD, Feb. 3 (Xinhuanet) -- A US soldier was killed and another injured on Tuesday by a roadside bomb in Iraq, the US military said in a statement.

    The roadside bomb exploded at about 10.30 a.m. (0730 GMT) when the US soldiers were carrying out an operation to clear such weapons near Iskandariya, 56 km south Baghdad, it added.

    The death brings to at least 367 the number of US soldiers killed in combat in Iraq since the start of the US-led war on Iraq.

    It also brings to 251 the number of US soldiers killed by hostile fire since US President George W. Bush declared the major fighting over on May 1 last year.

    On Sunday, a US soldier was killed and 12 others were wounded,two in critical condition, when an American base was attacked by rockets in northern Iraq, a US military spokesman said.Insurgents fired seven rockets around 1:15 p.m. (1015 GMT) atthe base in Balad, some 80 km north of Baghdad, said the spokesman.Enditem
