HANOI, Jan. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- Vietnam has detected two more cases of H5N1 infections, raising the total to 10, a health official told Xinhua on Wednesday.
"According to our testing, the two people, who died on Jan. 22 in the Hospital of Tropical Diseases in Hanoi, were infected with H5N1," said Hoang Thuy Long, director of Vietnam's Hygiene and Epidemiology Institute.
The two people are sisters born in the northern province of Thai Binh, he noted.
However, the World Health Organization (WHO) has not confirmed the two cases. "We are sending samples to Hong Kong for testing," said Bob Dietz, spokesman of the organization in Vietnam.
According to WHO, there have been eight confirmed cases of H5N1infections in the country, of them six have died. The most recently confirmed case is a four-year-old boy who is in quick recovery.
Another patient is an 8-year-old girl in Ho Chi Minh City, who is under treatment in the city-based Hospital of Tropical Diseases.
"The girl is recovering well, and has never been in need of a respirator," Le Truong Giang, deputy director of the Ho Chi Minh City Health Department, told Xinhua on Wednesday.
Vietnam has reported a total of more than 50 flu type A infections and suspects, of whom 18 have died. According to Shigeru Omi, director of WHO's Western Pacific Region Office, 36 samples are under testing for H5N1, and there are nine possible cases. Enditem |
