TEHRAN, Jan. 25 (Xinhuanet) -- The Iranian
parliament on Sunday approved some changes to the electoral law after a row with
the Guardians Council over disqualification of reformist candidates from
upcoming elections.
The parliament, controlled by the reformists, had proposed two amendments to the electoral law, to make it easier for candidates to stand for election.
One of the amendments would prevent the Guardians Council from disqualifying incumbent lawmakers unless they had been convicted ofa criminal offence.
A second amendment would prevent disqualifications based on any other criteria than Iran's common law.
But the amendments have to be approved by the Guardians Council, which had rejected over 3,605 of 8,157 prospective candidates, mostof them reformers, from standing in the seventh parliamentary elections on Feb. 20. Enditem |
