KARACHI, Jan. 15 (Xinhuanet) -- At least one person died and 12 injured in Pakistan's restive southern port city of Karachi Thursday after a grenade attack on a church followed by a bomb blast in a parked vehicle near a church, police said.
An unidentified man threw a grenade at Trinity Church in south of the city and fled away, witnesses said. Police and personnel oflaw enforcement agencies had gathered around the church when a parked vehicle exploded, they said.
One person died while 12 others injured. The bomb blast destroyed at least nine vehicles and several motorcycles parked infront of Bible Society, a Christian welfare society-cum-library, police said.
Two high-ranking police officers, four policemen and three ranger personnel were injured in the blast.
But police said that the church was attacked through crackers. "A man threw a cracker in the premises of Trinity Church," said Tariq Jamil, DIG Operations, Karachi Police. "It was not a grenade," he said. Police and law enforcement agencies had cordoned off the area. Injured persons were shifted to a state-run hospital.
An official of the hospital confirmed one dead. "We've given treatment to 12 persons, who got minor injuries from the blast," she said. Enditem |
