BAM, Iran, Jan. 8 (Xinhuanet) -- A 56-year-old man was rescued alive from rubble Wednesday night, 13 days after the Bam earthquake in southwestern Iran, state radio and medical workers said Thursday.

The rescu ed man, whose first name is thought to be Jalil, was in poor health when he was found. He was taken to a field hospital in the city immediately.

The medics said they were closely following the status of the man, who was still in a coma.

An Iranian search and rescue team found the man beneath a wardrobe which had apparently saved his life.

He was the first survivor to be pulled out alive from the ruins since a 97-year-old woman was rescued on Jan. 3.

A powerful earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale rocked the historical city of Bam in southeastern Iran on Dec. 26, killing at least 30,000 people and destroying nearly 90 percent of the buildings in the city. Enditem
