WHO confirms SARS case in Guangdong province

    GENEVA, Jan. 5 (Xinhuanet) -- The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed on Monday that a suspected case of SARS in China's Guangdong province was a case of the respiratory disease.

    The confirmation came after an independent laboratory test.

    This is the first case of SARS on the Chinese mainland since it was effectively controlled last year.

    The condition of the patient, a 32-year-old man, was reported stable Monday and those who came into contact with him have shown no symptoms of SARS. Enditem
