TEHRAN, Dec. 29 (Xinhuanet) -- The United Nations agencies in Iran have provided cash and kind donations to the earthquake victims in the devastated city of Bam, UN Information Center (UNIC) said hereMonday.
A joint UN Field Assessment Team, consisting of representatives from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), United Nations Children'S Fund (UNICEF), United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), World Food Program (WFP) and World Health Organization (WHO), was dispatched to the affected areas in Bam Friday afternoon.
The first UNICEF cargo flight arrived in Bam from neighboring Afghanistan Sunday morning. The relief items included dozens of special obstetric and surgical kits, 14,000 blankets, 625,000 water purification tablets, 16 community water tanks, three portable generators and other shelter supplies.
UNHCR is donating relief items valued at 140,000 US dollars, including 1,000 tents, 10,000 blankets and 3,000 mattresses.
UNDP has contributed an emergency grant of 100,000 dollars to support national relief and coordination efforts.
UN agencies are supporting the UN Resident Coordinator's Officeand UN Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) in coordinating the assistance of all UN agencies in Iran, and working with the Iranian government in emergency response and post-disaster rehabilitation activities.
UN Office for the Coordination for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA),United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) have contributed cash for the purchase of relief items.
The WHO will provide medical and health supplies and the WFP will provide food items for the earthquake victims. United NationsEducational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will participate in the reconstruction of schools and historical Bam Citadel. Enditem |
