BEIJING, Dec. 17 (Xinhuanet) -- The Chinese mainland remains on high alert against a possible return of SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome).

A Ministry of Health spokesman made the remark here Wednesday, following news that a Taiwan researcher had contracted the disease.

The ministry is keeping a close eye on the SARS situation in Taiwan, the spokesman said. Enditem
