ROME, Dec. 11 (Xinhuanet) -- A car exploded near a synagogue in Italy's northern city of Modena early Thursday morning, killing the driver inside the car, local media reported.

The Police said the incident might be a suicide and not necessarily a terrorist attack. The investigation is under way.

The man, apparently from the Middle East with his nationality yet to be confirmed, set himself on fire with liquid gas. The police attempted to put out the flame but moved away before the car blew up.

There were no reports of other injuries so far. The explosion blew out some windows nearby. Enditem
