BAGHDAD, Dec. 10 (Xinhuanet) -- A US soldier was shot dead and another wounded on Wednesday at a gas station in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, the US military said.

"One of the two soldiers has died" after they were attacked by unknown assailants, said Major Trey Cate, spokesman for the 101st Airborne Division in Mosul.

The attackers fired on the gas station and offices of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan before they sped off in two vehicles, the spokesman said.

Cate earlier said a gunman had been killed in the attack on the gas station guarded by US troops.

The latest death brought to 194 the number of US soldiers killed in hostile fire since US President George W. Bush declared major combat in Iraq over on May 1. Enditem
