MOSCOW, Dec. 9 (Xinhuanet) -- Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov blamed the car explosion that killed at
least five in downtown Moscow Tuesday morning on terrorist act, which is aimed
at the State Duma, Interfax reported.
Earlier reports said a female suicide bomber set off an
explosive-loaded car at about 10:50 a.m. Moscow time (0750 GMT) in the capital's
main shopping street Tverskaya, near the National Hotel, which is not far from
the Kremlin in the renowned Red Square.
Luzhkov said at the site of the explosion that two female suicide
bombers were believed to behind the tragedy.
The mayor noted that two women approached a passer-by and asked him
the way to the State Duma. "Evidently the bomb went off by accident," he added.
"The National Hotel was not the place where the suicide bombers had
planned to stage the explosion," he said.
The Tuesday explosion occurred two days after Russia's nationwide
parliamentary elections to the State Duma, which is just on the opposite of the
National Hotel.
The Interior Ministry confirmed that only one of the two terrorists
triggered off explosive device attached to her. Both of them were killed .
The police detonated another explosive device bounded on the second
suicide bomber. The power of the explosives was equal to five kg of TNT,
according to Itar-Tass.
The news agency said earlier that some 20 people were injured in the
deadly blast, however, a spokesman for the city's healthcare department said the
number was 13.
One of the injured is in critical condition, the rest are in
grave and mildly grave condition. Enditem
