Moscow suicide car bombing aimed at State Duma: Mayor

MOSCOW, Dec. 9 (Xinhuanet) --  Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov blamed the car explosion that killed at least five in downtown Moscow Tuesday morning on terrorist act, which is aimed at the State Duma, Interfax reported.

Earlier reports said a female suicide bomber set off an explosive-loaded car at about 10:50 a.m. Moscow time (0750 GMT) in the capital's main shopping street Tverskaya, near the National Hotel, which is not far from the Kremlin in the renowned Red Square.

Luzhkov said at the site of the explosion that two female suicide bombers were believed to behind the tragedy.

The mayor noted that two women approached a passer-by and asked him the way to the State Duma. "Evidently the bomb went off by accident," he added.

"The National Hotel was not the place where the suicide bombers had planned to stage the explosion," he said.

The Tuesday explosion occurred two days after Russia's nationwide parliamentary elections to the State Duma, which is just on the opposite of the National Hotel.

The Interior Ministry confirmed that only one of the two terrorists triggered off explosive device attached to her. Both of them were killed .

The police detonated another explosive device bounded on the second suicide bomber. The power of the explosives was equal to five kg of TNT, according to Itar-Tass.

The news agency said earlier that some 20 people were injured in the deadly blast, however, a spokesman for the city's healthcare department said the number was 13.

One of the injured is in critical condition, the rest are in grave and mildly grave condition. Enditem
