GENEVA, Dec. 3 (Xinhuanet) -- The World Health Organization (WHO) urged Wednesday governments at all levels to make a stronger commitment to the implementation of the rights of people with disabilities,
On the international Day for Disabled Persons which falls on Dec. 3, WHO called on governments to foster their participation toaccess health and rehabilitation services and to include them in all development activities.
According to WHO, about 600 million people in the world experience disabilities of various types and degrees. The day-to-day life of 25 percent of the world population is affected by disability, which affects entire families, not just individual.
Eight percent of the world's disabled people live in low-incomecountries. And WHO said the global disabled population is increasing as a result of population growth, malnutrition, chronicconditions, HIV/AIDS, Road injuries and land mines.
WHO said Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR), an approach designed to empower people with disabilities and introduced by WHOsome 20 years, is proved very helpful.
However, WHO experts hold that the CBR needs multi-sector collaboration with the involvement of all ministries, especially health, education, social welfare, labor, development and finance.WHO recommends that the CBR should be a part of strategies to reduce poverty. Enditem |
