BAGHDAD, Nov. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- A US soldier was killed in a mortar attack in Iraq's northern city of Mosul on Friday, the US military said.

The mortar rounds hit the US 101st Airborne Division compound inthe city, 400 km north of Baghdad, killing the soldier and slightlyinjuring an Iraqi worker, a US spokesman said.

The attack took place around 11:00 a.m. (0800 GMT), he added.

According to the latest tally, at least 185 US soldiers have been killed by hostile fire in Iraq since US President George W. Bush declared the major fighting over on May 1.

Mosul, one of the most peaceful places in Iraq following the US-led occupation, has witnessed escalated violence recently.

On Sunday, two US soldiers were shot dead by unknown gunmen in Mosul and their bodies were pummeled and robbed by local residents. Enditem
