US ready to reopen its embassy in Riyadh
www.chinaview.cn 2003-11-14 17:18:02

RIYADH, Nov. 14 (Xinhuanet) -- The US embassy in Riyadh said Friday that it will resume its operation on Saturday after closing one week ago due to security concerns.

"The embassy wishes to advise the American community that it and the consulates in Jeddah and Dhahran will reopen on Saturday, Nov. 15, 2003 for normal operations, including consular services to the public," a statement said.

The United States closed its embassy in the capital Riyadh and two consulates in Saudi Arabia on Saturday after receiving reliable intelligence about terror attacks.

One day later, a serial suicide car bombing tore through a residential compound in Riyadh, killing at least 17 people and injuring over 120 others. Most of the casualties were Arab expatriates.

Saudi-born Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida terror network has purportedly claimed responsibility for the deadly attack, warning that Gulf states, the United States and Iraq would be the next targets.

"Given the uncertainty of the current security environment, the US mission continues to urge American citizens to remain vigilant, maintain a low profile and follow prudent security practices," the statement said.

"American citizens should avoid places where westerners are seen to congregate," it added. Enditem
