Iran stands ready for energy cooperation with Iraq: Iranian FM

MADRID, Oct. 24 (Xinhuanet) -- Iran stands ready to supply electricity and gas to Iraq and to facilitate the neighbor's oil exports through Iran's oil terminals, Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi said here Friday.

"On the basis of the foregoing, Iran has decided to actively participate in and contribute to the reconstruction of Iraq. We have envisaged a comprehensive package of economic cooperation comprising development aid, investment, trade, tourism, project financing and so on," Kharazi said at a two-day donors conference on Iraq that opened here Thursday.

Iran's plan for tourism and pilgrimage was expected to initially bring around 500 million US dollars in revenue each yearby making necessary travel arrangements for some 100,000 tourists per month to visit Iraqi cultural and religious sites, Kharazi told the participants.

He added that Tehran's economic aid package also included "an up to 300-million-dollar credit facility in buyers' and suppliers'credit, project financing for various priority sectors indicated by the Iraqi authorities, and provision of goods, equipment and services."

"Iran plans to link its road and rail system to that of Iraq. Provisions of port facilities to provide Iraq with more access to the Persian Gulf and other trade and transit corridors all fall into this context," he added.

Claiming that developments in Iraq have far-reaching impacts onneighboring Iran and other countries of the region, Kharazi said the creation of a stable and peaceful government in Iraq would benefit all nations, particularly its neighbors.

"There is an emerging consensus on the pivotal role of the United Nations in the post-war Iraq, as well as the transfer of authority to its citizens as soon as possible. Equally, the ownership of the process of reconstruction needs to lie with the people of Iraq...We believe that the Coalition Provisional Authority has the responsibility to ensure security and order (in Iraq)," Kharazi stressed.

Kharazi's remarks came as Kuwait and Saudi Arabia respectively pledged on Friday 1 billion dollars of aid to Iraq at the donors conference. Enditem
