US gets Security Council unanimous support for Iraq draft resolution

Xinhuanet 2003-10-16 23:27:39

UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 16 (Xinhuanet) -- The United Nations Security Council on Thursday voted unanimously for a United States-proposed draft resolution on Iraq, which is intended to pave the way for international contributions of troops and money for the war-battered nation.

””””The adopted resolution authorizes the transformation of the current occupying force in Iraq into a US-led multinational force. It gives the Iraqi Governing Council until Dec. 15 a timetable for drafting a new constitution and holding elections.

””””But the measure does not contain a specific timetable for the end of the US occupation of Iraq as demanded by some key council members.

””””In its last-ditch efforts on Wednesday, Washington successfully got Russia, Germany, France and Syria on board. All the four countries had been expected to abstain from the voting until Wednesday night.

””””Council diplomats said that Russia later persuaded Germany and France to go along with other council members, leaving Syria the only opponent. Such a scenario forced Syria to change its mind, they said.

””””"This resolution will undoubtedly have positive significance for the endeavor to promote the political process in Iraq, accelerate power transfer by CPA (occupying coalition) to the Iraqi people, gradually strengthen the role of the UN and increase transparency in Iraqi economic reconstruction," Chinese UN Ambassador Wang Guangya told the council after the vote.
